FAQ

Why do people vape?

Many people use vaping to stop or reduce smoking cigarettes. Nicotine Vaping Products mimics the familiar hand-to-much action and sensations of smoking, whilst knowing that the authentic nicotine vaping products that are TGO 110 compliant have no carcinogens. The 2019 Australian National Drug Strategy Household Survey also states additional reasons why people vape. Furthermore, nicotine dosages can also be more easily judged and stepped which may assist in reducing your nicotine intake. The effectiveness of using vaping as an aid to quit smoking is mixed.

What is the difference between smoking and vaping?

Smoking involves burning tobacco while vaping involves heating nicotine. The process of burning tobacco causes compounds to combust. As a result, many toxic chemical by-products are produced in the smoke, which are harmful to your health. These include:

  • Ammonia
  • Hydrogen cyanide
  • Nitrosamines
  • Lead
  • Benzene
  • Formaldehyde
  • Carbon monoxide
Is vaping addictive?

Nicotine Vaping products are addictive.

Should I try patches or gum before vaping?

Yes, Australian Healthcare Practitioners should advise you to consider alternative nicotine replacement therapies such as patches or gum first. Once these options have been exhausted, then vaping may consider and be recommended.

Why vape pods?

There are many different vapes on the market.  There are various devices, coils, liquids, salts, and flavours, which can become quite overwhelming for many consumers.  The reason why closed system nicotine salt based pods are so popular is because they are ready to be inhaled.

Closed system devices are where the e-liquid is enclosed in a sealed container. Closed system devices are generally considered safer due to decreased risk of contact with liquid nicotine through accidental oral or dermal exposure.

Do all vapes contain nicotine?

Not all vapes contain nicotine.  Some e-cigarettes are completely nicotine free and only contain a flavour.  These are even better alternatives to nicotine vapes and don’t require a prescription.

How do I change from smoking to vaping?

Some people can make the switch straight away, however this doesn’t mean that everybody does. You can gradually increase the amount you vape whilst slowly reducing the amount you smoke.  Finding a pod that has a pleasant flavour and feel may assist your transition.  It is important that you speak with your doctor about getting your nicotine dosage right.  Similar to smoking a cigarette, it is generally better to practice inhaling softly over a longer draw rather than quick, hard puffs.  It is also important to be patient, as quitting smoking is very hard.

Is vaping illegal?

As of 1 October 2021, purchasing e-cigarettes and e-liquids containing nicotine became illegal to all Australians unless you have a prescription from a doctor. To see if you qualify to access nicotine vapes in Australia, Smartstop is here to connect you with a vape doctor.

How does the process work?
As vaporising nicotine is now a Schedule 4 Prescription Only Medicine, you will need a prescription from a doctor.  Australian doctors can either apply through the special access scheme or the Authorised Prescriber Scheme.  Once the doctor has been approved and prescribed you nicotine, an Australian pharmacist can dispense the nicotine e-cigarettes.
Do I have to import my vape?
No. All of our products are held in Australia, making it potentially more accessible and affordable for you to receive a vape. You also don’t have to import products yourself, which means you don’t have to deal with the hassle and anxiety of paperwork, importation and border force.
How many vapes can I get?

If you qualify for a nicotine vaping product prescription, the prescription can allow up to 15 vape pods for a 3 month supply with a potential 3 repeats, making it a maximum total of 60 vape pods for a 12 month supply.  Once you run out, you will need another script from a doctor.  Smartstop recommended doctor clinic may be able to facilitate this process once again, so be sure to check back in at the end of your supply.  If you don’t use the prescription within 12 months, it will expire and you will need a new script from our referred doctor clinic.

What are the risks associated with vaping?

There is insufficient evidence to date on the potential long term impacts of vaping use. However there is still a lot of research that needs to be done when comparing the benefits against the risks of e-cigarettes. Like most things, vapes do have inherent dangers that should be considered. There are different qualities of vapes that can be much more harmful than others, and contain substances that are illegal in Australia. Click here for more information on risks.

Smartstop products are not registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and can only be prescribed through the Special Access Scheme (SAS), the Authorised Prescriber Scheme (AP) or by Clinical Trial as they are unapproved therapeutic goods. Unapproved therapeutic goods have not been evaluated for quality, safety, efficacy or performance. Therefore, the prescribing health practitioner must consider the available evidence to support the use of the unapproved product and any potential risks for the individual patient. The responsibilities of the prescribing health practitioner include adhering to relevant standards of the goods medical practice and obtaining informed consent. The long-term health risks of unapproved nicotine vaping products, even those that comply with TGO 110, are still unclear. Patients can also call Quitline 13 78 48 or visit the Quit Now website.
