It is illegal to obtain a nicotine vaping product without a prescription from a doctor. Additionally there are different qualities of vapes that may be much more harmful to your health than others. Many vapes obtained outside of Australian pharmacies contain substances that are illegal in Australia. Australian pharmacies have an obligation to only dispense TGO 110 compliant nicotine vaping products.
Yes, Australian Healthcare Practitioners should advise you to consider alternative nicotine replacement therapies such as patches or gum first. If these treatment options do not work or are unsuitable for your needs, then your doctor may consider prescribing a nicotine vaping product as part of your treatment plan to help you quit smoking.
Some people can make the switch straight away, however this doesn’t mean that everybody does. You can gradually increase the amount of gum, patches or nicotine vaping product you use whilst slowly reducing the amount you smoke. Finding a therapy that suits you may assist your transition. It is important that you speak with your doctor about getting your nicotine dosage right. For example, if your doctor suggests vaping due to it being similar to smoking a cigarette, it is generally better to practice inhaling softly over a longer draw rather than quick, hard puffs. It is also important to be patient, as quitting smoking is very hard.

There are many different vaping products on the market. There are various devices, coils, liquids, salts, and flavours, which can become quite overwhelming for many consumers. The RACGP recommends closed system nicotine salt based devices because they limit physical harm compared to other devices.
Closed system devices contain e-liquid enclosed in a sealed container. Closed system devices are generally considered safer due to decreased risk of contact with liquid nicotine through accidental oral or dermal exposure.

Many people use nicotine vaping products to stop or reduce smoking cigarettes. These products mimic the familiar hand-to-mouth action and sensations of smoking. Nicotine vaping products which are “TGO 110 compliant” conform with Australian product safety and quality standards, and do not contain prohibited ingredients. The 2019 Australian National Drug Strategy Household Survey has further information regarding why people vape. Additionally, nicotine dosing is more easily controlled, which may assist in reducing your nicotine intake. Data on the effectiveness of using vaping as an aid to quit smoking is mixed.
Smoking cigarettes involves the burning of tobacco (which contains nicotine), while vaping involves the heating of a substance (e.g. nicotine). This may sound similar but the process of burning tobacco causes the compounds to combust. As a result, many toxic chemical by-products are produced in the smoke, which are harmful to your health. These may include:
Yes, nicotine vaping products are addictive.
Not all vaping products contain nicotine. Vaping products are also known as e-cigarettes and vapes, and can be completely nicotine free. Non-nicotine vaping products only contain flavourings and do not require a prescription.
As of 1 October 2021, purchasing e-cigarettes and e-liquids containing nicotine became illegal to all Australians unless you have a prescription from a doctor. If you are seeking access to nicotine vaping products in Australia via a prescription, Smartstop is here to connect you with a doctor who will confirm your eligibility for this treatment option.
The doctor will assess your situation and recommend a suitable nicotine replacement therapy. The only prescription based treatment option is nicotine vaping products, as vaporising nicotine is now a Schedule 4 Prescription Only Medicine. Australian doctors can either apply through the TGA’s Special Access Scheme or the Authorised Prescriber Scheme. Once the doctor has received TGA approval and written a prescription for a patient, an Australian pharmacist can dispense nicotine vaping products for that patient.
No. Smartstop’s partner pharmacy network has an extensive range of vaping products, removing the time, hassle and cost of importing and dealing with border force.
Depending on how heavy a smoker you are, the doctor may write you a nicotine vaping prescription. The heaviest smokers may receive a script for up to 15 vape pods per month, with a maximum 3 month supply at any time. This means a maximum total of 180 vape pods may be supplied over a 12 month period. Once you run out, you will need another script from a doctor. If required, Smartstop can re-refer you to doctors who may be able to facilitate this process once again, if that is deemed an appropriate treatment option. If you don’t use the prescription within 12 months, it will expire and you will need a new script from our referred doctor clinic.
There is insufficient evidence to date on the potential long term impacts of vaping use. More research is required to fully understand the benefits vs. risks of e-cigarettes. Like most things, vaping products do have inherent dangers that should be considered. Click here for more information on risks.
To understand these risks fully, you should always speak to a doctor. Click here for a doctor referral.
Smartstop products are not registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and can only be prescribed through the Special Access Scheme (SAS), the Authorised Prescriber Scheme (AP) or by Clinical Trial as they are unapproved therapeutic goods. Unapproved therapeutic goods have not been evaluated for quality, safety, efficacy or performance. Therefore, the prescribing health practitioner must consider the available evidence to support the use of the unapproved product and any potential risks for the individual patient. The responsibilities of the prescribing health practitioner include adhering to relevant standards of the goods medical practice and obtaining informed consent. The long-term health risks of unapproved nicotine vaping products, even those that comply with TGO 110, are still unclear. Patients can also call Quitline 13 78 48 or visit the Quit Now website.
